23 Oct: Alfran’s collaboration in the first shutdown of the Fuel 2 unit at La Rábida Refinery

refinería la rábida

The La Rábida de Cepsa Refinery, located in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva), undertook the first official scheduled shutdown of the Fuel 2 plant during the month of June, since it began its production in 2010. To carry out the scheduled works for the shutdown, an average of 2,000 workers per day of contractors have been counted, plus Cepsa’s own staff.

ALFRAN has collaborated in this shutdown of the La Rábida Refinery in the elimination, supply and installation of the new refractory of the NKH1 furnace roof of the Hidrocraking unit. Originally installed in 2008, it began to come off during the current operating cycle of the plant. The new refractory lining responds to a better construction design, as well as the use of new materials. The new installation consists of a double layer based on insulating block in contact with the sheet and insulating refractory concrete in hot face. The duration of the work was 10 days in double shift. Thus, the milestones requested by CEPSA in its planning were met successfully. ALFRAN helped achieve the goal of zero accidents, thanks to the training and awareness of its staff.

For CEPSA this shutdown has had special relevance. Not only for the volume of work carried out, maintenance and inspection, but also for the execution of new projects.

Great coordination work

The development of a shutdown requires a great work of coordination of all the units and departments that participate. From the Purchase and Warehouse area to the Operations area, through Maintenance, Engineering, Environment … and, of course, Safety.

This coordination, together with the rigorous control of daily tasks, is essential to guarantee the safety of people and facilities. In this sense, it must be remembered that during the La Rábida refinery shutdown there has been no accident or incident. The zero index of accident rate, constant objective and essential value of ALFRAN has been fulfilled.

From ALFRAN, we are proud to collaborate, once again, with CEPSA in this type of projects.

In this link you can see a video of the shutdown.

21 Sep: Protect yourself against the heat

prevención de golpe de calor

In summer, the climatic conditions to which workers are exposed can be the cause of work accidents, some of them fatal. Heat stress due to high temperature, commonly known as heat stroke, is the heat load that workers receive and accumulate in their bodies and which results from the interaction between the environmental conditions of the place where they work, the physical activity they perform and the clothes they wear.

Exposure to heat can cause various health effects, of different severity, such as rash on the skin, edema of the extremities, burns, muscle cramps, dehydration, exhaustion, etc. But, undoubtedly, the most serious effect of exposure to situations of intense heat is heat stroke. When the so-called heat stroke occurs, the body temperature exceeds 40.6 ºC (105.08 ºF) , being mortal between 15% and 25% of cases.

Symptomatology of thermal sensation due to heat

Symptoms of a heat stroke

General Symotoms

Internal temperature higher than 40.6ºC (105.08 ºF)
Tachycardia
Fast breathing
Headache
Nausea and vomiting
Cutaneous symptoms
Dry and hot skin
Absence of sweating
Sensorineural symptoms
Confusion and seizures
Loss of consciousness
Dilated pupils

General preventive measures

These measures are applicable to all work, in closed or outdoor places, where heat stress is usually caused by heat.

The employer must…
The employee must…
1
Inform and train workers about the risks, effects and preventive measures. Train them in the recognition of the first symptoms of the heat affections in themselves and their companions and in the application of first aid.
Inform your superiors if you are acclimated or not to heat; if you have ever had problems with the heat; chronic diseases that may suffer; if they are taking any medication.
2
Take care that all workers are acclimatized to the heat according to the physical effort they are going to make. Allow them to adapt the work rhythms to their tolerance to heat.
Adapt the work rate to your tolerance to heat.
3
Have resting places cool, covered or in the shade, and allow workers to rest when they need it and especially when they feel bad
Rest in cool places when they are very hot. If you feel bad, stop the activity and rest in a cool place until you recover, because continuing to work can be very dangerous. Avoid driving if you are not fully recovered.
4
Provide fresh water and instruct workers to drink it frequently.
Drink water frequently during work even if you are not thirsty. It is also necessary to continue drinking water when you are away from work.
5
Modify work processes to eliminate or reduce the emission of heat and humidity and excessive physical effort. Provide mechanical help to decrease the latter.

27 Jul: Seminar: “Refractory Solutions for the Copper Industry”

industria del cobre

Last June, days 14 and 15, the first seminar “Refractory Solutions for the Copper Industry” was held in the city of Santiago, Chile, with great success.

With the assistance of 21 people, keys of the main companies of that industry in the country (Angloamerican, Codelco, Enami Paipote, Glencore) as well as Atlantic Copper (Spain). We also had the participation of professors from the University of Concepción (Chile) and the University of Huelva (Spain), in addition to the participation of our counselor Patricio Barrios, with extensive professional experience in the copper industry in different multinational companies .

As part of the program, we had the opportunity to present to the participants our refractory solutions for the industry, taking advantage of the opportunity to present our most recent catalogue for this sector.

Interactive activities were carried out which were of great value to the participants.

One of them was the exhibition of success stories with our materials from the people in charge of the operations as exhibitors:

  • Codelco Ventanas: “Electric oven and reverbe”.
  • Atlantic Copper: “Applications of refractory-fiber technology at critical points”.
  • Glencore Altonorte: “Converters mouths”.

Additionally, and as an offer of value for the seminar, we carried out two round tables and a master class giving a look to the future and innovation:

  • Round table: “The challenges of the copper industry”. Roberto Parra/Patricio Barrios
  • Round table: “Replacement of refractories formed by non-conformed”. José María Domínguez/Luis Hurtado
  • Master lecture: “Selective recycling of refractories in the industry”. Margarita Álvarez.

As usual, we had the opportunity to share with our guests acts of a more playful and social nature to enhance networking.

Academic activities about not conformed refractories, are not common in Chile. Therefore, our guests have asked us to make them on a regular basis.

We aim to be able to carry out, in the near future, our second Seminar, in the search to reach every corner of this industry, not only in Chile but throughout the region.
