27 May: Conversion and Area Units Shutdown in the Petronor Refinery. Muskiz, Spain.

At the end of last February, Oil & Gas EMEA finished the refractory and fireproofing jobs of the shutdown of the Conversion and Area Units in the Petronor refinery in Muskiz, Spain. This project initially included jobs in 9 different equipments:

For the development of the works, a total of 45 workers were mobilized. The tasks were developed in 2 shifts, completing more than 10,000 hours of work and reaching the goal of “zero accidents”.

As highlighted works it should be noted that the demolition and replacement of 80% of the refractory (insulator + dense) inside the incinerator SR3-H-001-B was carried out; the coating of Sulfur Pit SR3-TK-0001-B by applying 16,000 kg of our Alfran Gun Ak-42; and, finally, the supply of 126,000 kg of Alfran Lite 10-14, which were installed in various pipelines, furnaces and preheaters.

The completion of this stop at the Petronor Refinery, reaffirms the confidence that the Repsol group is placing in Refractarios Alfran as a regular supplier of materials and labor for refractory and fireproofing work, in the face of future stops at the Muskiz refinery in Petronor.

03 May: Cemex Rugby Shutdown 2019

During the past months of January and February, the scheduled maintenance shutdown at the cement plant that Cemex has in Rugby (England) after 24 months of operation has taken place. Alfran has a leading role in Rugby in the supply and installation of refractory material.

The installation period was 26 work days with a volume of more than 60 people. The volume of installation of refractory concrete from Alfran has accounted for 87% of the total installed material, a very important part with our system of shotcrete alfranjet. In addition, 47 linear meters of furnace have been repaired and other brick works have been carried out.

The use of the Brokk autonomous demolition machine for the first time in this plant stands out in this intervention, which offers a substantial improvement in terms of safety and performance.

17 Apr: II Edition of Refractory Engineering Course

The National Association of Manufacturers of Refractory Products, Materials an Related Services (ANFRE) held in Seville, between March 11 and 14, the II Edition of Refractories Engineering Course.

It is a course taught by and for members of ANFRE that aims to train new generations of employees.

The course combines theoretical and practical training to obtain a global vision of the sector. In addition, the participants had the opportunity to visit both Siderúrgica Sevillana and our Alfran plant in Seville.

The following topics are found in the content of this course:

Refractory materials
Introduction to the design of coatings
Refractory application
Drying, heating and cooling
Safety and Quality Control

20 Mar: Alfran attends Petroperu’s international furnaces and boilers seminar

Alfran has participated in an important seminar organized in Lima by Petroperú together with other leading international companies in the field of design and operation of furnaces and boilers. There, Alfran presented a paper on Energy Efficiency through the different refractory coatings.

This international seminar is aimed at professionals in the hydrocarbon sector. Its objective is to highlight the main aspects related to the furnaces and boilers of the oil refining industry.

In this way, important specialized companies gathered there, who presented different presentations. Also attending were exhibitors from Petroperú’s Refining, Corporate Planning and PMRT Management Offices, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Mines, and other organizations.

20 Feb: Campaign Protect yourself: Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

To combat the risks of accidents and damage to health, the application of technical and organizational measures is a priority. These measures are designed to eliminate risks at source or to protect workers through collective protection provisions.

When these measures are not enough, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is imposed. The PPE act fundamentally reducing the consequences derived from the materialization of the risk. The protective efficacy will depend on the adequacy of the individual protection equipment at the pre-existing levels of risk.

The correct selection and use of the appropriate PPE will minimize the consequences and damages should the risk materialize. Therefore, the mandatory use of them is of vital importance.

Awareness campaigns in Alfran

With the aim of raising awareness among all employees towards active behavior in the prevention of occupational hazards and advancing their integration at all levels, different Awareness Campaigns will be carried out during 2019.

For this, maximum involvement and collaboration is necessary, highlighting the members of the Health and Safety Committee, Delegates and Prevention Technicians, Intermediate Managers and Project Managers.

12 Feb: 23rd Arab International Cement Conference and Exhibition (AICCE 23). Amman, Jordan

Alfran attended the 23rd Arab International Cement Conference and Exhibition (AICCE 23). It was held in Amman – Jordan, from November 20 to 22.

Our assistance in this fair, one more year, has served as a meeting point with our customers and partners / agents of North Africa and Arab Countries.

Our stand was attended by our Refractories EMEA Director, along with other collaborators from Spain, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

23 Jan: Second project in 2018 with Alfranjet 45 SiC in Midrex. Arab Steel – Al-Tuwairqi DRI. Arabia

Alfran Saudi Arabia was awarded the refractory repair project in the second DRI furnace (Direct Reduction) at the Tuwairqi Steel Plant in Dammam.

The works consisted of the regrowth of the worn-out bricks of the kiln towards its original thickness through the application, by shotcreting, of Alfranjet 45 SiC.

The project was carried out with the support of two Spanish Technicians and a Project Manager, together with fifteen ASA workers.

The works were completed in time and with the complete satisfaction of the client.

16 Jan: The importance of refractory materials

The WRA (World Refractory Association) has uploaded a video explaining the importance of refractory materials in our day to day. It is a very illustrative video for those people who do not know the strategic aspects of this sector.

Did you know that our day to day life would be unimaginable if refractory products did not exist?

And, what are reafractory products?

Let’s take the example of a car: it is made with steel, copper, glass, aluminum and plastics, among others. These materials are manufactured at very high temperatures. For example, iron is melted in an oven and transformed into steel by processes that reach 2,000 °C. In order that the walls of the furnace are not affected by these temperatures, they have a coating of refractory material. In the same way, these coatings are also used for the manufacture of glass, copper, aluminum and plastics.

And how do you get refractory materials to withstand such high temperatures? What are they made of? And how are they manufactured?

It starts from diverse raw materials of alumina or magnesia base that are baked in special ovens up to 1,800ºC, and this process makes the refractory properties appear. The refractory material can be supplied as non-conformed or shaped.

How are these refractory materials used?

The refractory material is transported and installed in the facilities of our customers. For the installation, a specialized refractory company is required.

And, how long can these installed refractory materials withstand such high temperatures?

The life time of the coatings usually depends on the industry, since they work at different temperatures. In the steel industry, the material usually lasts from a few hours to a few weeks, while in the glass industry it can last up to 10 years.

Once the coating has worn out, it is removed and recycled when possible.

The refractory industry covers the entire cycle, from the extraction of raw materials, to recycling.
